June 4, 2004 Storm Chase |  Picturesque severe storms in KS

Friday, June 4: Decided to make the haul out to west KS this day to see if the upslope flow would allow for some photogenic high based storms.  Dewpoints in this region were generally in the mid to upper 50s (adequate for the elevation out here) with southeasterly sfc winds beneath a northwesterly mid-level flow.  The downer was the magnitude of the winds aloft...only around 25 knots at 500mb.  I hung out in Goodland for most of the afternoon until a couple Cbs popped about 60 miles to my WSW upon which I headed south for an intercept.  Outside of some 1" stones and strong outflow waves, the best stuff would be later in the evening as the convection congealed into an MCS.  On my way east to Garden City, the shelf cloud began hinting at a possible meso embedded on the cyclonic shear side of the outflow.  It was laminar and circular, but I had a difficult time keeping up with as it was moving along at a good clip.  Called it a night in Garden City and hoped for good trends on the 00Z model runs.
