Original Target:
Santa Rosa, NM
| This was my first time chasing this far west in the PecosValley. It really wasn't as bad as I thought it might be, though the convective mode didn't cooperate too well. This is a linear mass to the NW just outside of Tucumcari. Prior to all of this, a horseshoe vortex was observed. | Several small gustnadoes were seen out here as the outflow raced on through. | ||
| Soil
erosion at its finest! My hair accumulated quite a
bit of it by this point from the estimated gusts to 50 knots. |
I decided to keep pace with the storm as the structure began to improve. SW of Tucumcari looking NE at forward flank updraft and a heavy core w/small hail. | ||
| Heading south to Clovis, NM all the while attempting to get ahead of this for a good view. The tornado warning earlier for this line was bogus - maybe residual SET from the previous day's supercells. Either way, the outflow was much more impressive when viewed on the other side. See COD's great view of the haboob here. | My determination to get in front of it was uncanny. I did learn my lesson the hard way by getting run over by several dust bands, tumbleweed and small cattle screaming over HWY 84 towards Lubbock! Dirt still resides on my door seals from all of this. I pulled over in Littlefield to get out of this and drove north to Amarillo for an early (4am) departure home the next day. A nice two day chase overall. |
