June 21, 2003 Storm Chase |  Northwestern SD hailfest and pseudo-supercell

Original Target:  Pierre, SD

I passed on my original target of Pierre due to a potent inversion and mid-level support being further upstream.  So I headed west and watched this guy evolve northwest of Howes which would eventually display a weak beaver's tail via the FFD (1, 2).  Semi-decent structure unfolded despite the large dewpoint depressions.
A nice rainfoot developed with time.  Adequate speed shear helped with the creation of a steady-state updraft despite a light westerly sfc flow. I set my water bottle on the warm hood and voila!
Still in the same spot as the core passes directly over me with 1-1.25" hailstones. Just another afternoon summer storm for the locals.
Well small hail may be typical, but this guy later dropped 2.5" hail that smashed Faith quite hard.  Some supercell characteristics are seen here looking to the west about 15 miles S of Faith.  Sfc winds were still westerly,  though the storm environmental winds were likely much different. Another view
It maintained this structure for at least 15 minutes before dumping over Faith. More hailers later on SW of Eagle Butte.  I headed back to Pierre and saw convection begin popping to the east, but it didn't organize until later in the evening. Attempted lightning shots at night along the MO River were thwarted by a swarm of hell bent mosquitos!
