June 23, 2003 Storm Chase |  Southwest NE LP/CL/HP supercells

Original Target:  Scottsbluff, NE (D'oh!)

I put way too much trust in the 12Z models for my initial target of far western NE.  Even with the stubborn stratus I thought clearing would evolve...which it did much later than was progged.  I aborted Scottsbluff and headed back to LBF and saw this guy way off to the southwest.  Not wanting to bust, I shot south to MCK to check it out.  I could clearly see a lack of precip in the FFD which revealed these well-developed mammatus overhead...a true LP!
Here is the left split to the northwest of McCook, NE which produced golfball size hail.  Note the decent inflow band to its SE.  The hodos were predominantly straight lined which allowed this guy to stick around for a while. To my SE was this classic supercell which I headed after later on. Check out an earlier view here.
To the south, a new LP was organizing. Here's the right mover with a healthy updraft base.  Instead of moving south for better contrast, I stuck it out here.
Classic RFD erosion produced this horseshoe appearance. Left mover advancing northeast.
Mammatus catching the setting sun over the peaceful NE countryside. Classic overturning convection with the supercell to the SE.
Unfortunately, dust hampered the view of the RFB of this classic supercell to the SE.  I chose not to get around it due to fading daylight. A wall cloud did organize here underneath a convective mound, but no rotation was seen.
The old LP right mover caught up with me and gave me a close look at its base. Nothing of great interest here as it began to dissipate.
The progression of the storms was from LP to classic to HP from west to east this evening due to the moist axis residing east of the area.  Here is a developing supercell that later acquired a TVS northeast of McCook.  These are just some of the CGs I caught with 5 second exposures. Upon reviewing the video, these were all staccato discharges. Dual CGs with a clear slot working in right before a TVS popped up.  At the motel this night, I was a little more relieved to see a supercell running south of my initial target of Scottsbluff...but this was after 10pm!
